A SAFETY campaigner has won her battle to get security cameras installed at a station.

Receptionist Debbie Bennett, 45, decided to take action after her friend was attacked outside Hither Green station last year.

And now, thanks to her efforts, four new CCTV cameras have been installed near the station.

Mrs Bennett, of Fernbrook Road, Hither Green, gathered a petition with more than 1,000 signatures and passed it on to MP for Lewisham East, Bridget Prentice.

Mrs Bennett said: "My friend was on his way home from a night out when he was attacked.

"The ordeal really shook him up and I just thought enough is enough'.

"I'm so pleased the cameras are up now, they should at least make people feel more protected."

Mrs Prentice said: "We hope to be able to turn the station from one which is badly lit and unmonitored into a safer station which people actually enjoy using."

The cameras will be positioned at various points around the station, including one in the alleyway off Staplehurst Road.

Each camera is linked to a central control centre in Lewisham where they will be continuously monitored by controllers.

Margaret Bishop was another victim who was mugged while out walking her dog and is sure her attacker would have thought twice if the cameras were there.

The 59-year-old, of Leahurst Road, Lee Green, said: "The attack has made me feel hesitant and afraid to go out on my own at night.

"I think cameras are the only way forward in preventing incidents like this happening in unlit places."
