It’s super Munn in Clash of the Tritons event

3:19pm Friday 27th August 2004

Greenwich Tritons Triathlon Club held its first "Clash of the Tritons" event a swimming and running run race held at the Eric Liddell Leisure Centre, in Mottingham Lane.

This was the Tritons' first public race, with a 500-metre swim followed by a 5km run around the playing fields of Eltham College.

A club spokesman said: "We had a marvellous response, with more than 100 competitors ranging in ages from 14 to 67. Most of them were local people, but we had some who came from Hampshire and Hertfordshire."

The event was divided into various age and sex categories.

Winner of the men's event was Richard Nunn, from the SBR Club, who clocked 23mins 12secs, when finishing 35 seconds ahead of David Castle, from Sevenoaks Triathlon Club.

First woman to finish was Belinda Alcock in 27:33 27 seconds clear of second-placed Tracey Horne, also from the Sevenoaks club.

The male veterans' race, for those aged 40 and over, was won by Peter Manning in 27:48, nearly three minutes ahead of second-placed Cornelius Griffin.

In the women's section for this age group, Katie Crowe timed 30:36 when beating Marion Lambert from the Trent Park Running Club, in Hertfordshire, by nine seconds short of two minutes.

In the male junior under-16 class, Lawrence Easterbrook, who clocked 29:38, took the honours, 38 seconds ahead of Jonathan Cooper.

The female under-16 juniors competed in a half-distance event 250-metre swim and 2.5km run. Greenwich Borough Swimming Club proved to be the dominant force, with its members taking the first two places. Grace Winter won in 18:38, just under a minute ahead of Nicola Oleman.

The host club spokesman added: "The event was a huge success and we plan to hold another next year."

The event was sponsored by PhysioActive and the New Community Church, in Eltham, while Harry Perry Cycles, in Woolwich, provided spot prizes.
