THE prosecution in the trial of two men accused of murdering a doctor has dismissed claims from one defendant he was lost and stumbled upon his alleged victim.

Thomas Connor, of Curtismill Way, St Paul's Cray, and William Paton, of nearby Clarendon Way, are appearing at the Old Bailey charged with the murder and robbery of wealthy doctor Nadim Gulamhuseinwala last summer.

The 32-year-old died from serious head injuries on August 5, two weeks after being attacked in Green Park, near Buckingham Palace.

Cross-examining Connor, prosecutor Andrew Edis told the court Connor and Paton, both aged 20, had visited Green Park with the intention of robbing someone.

Mr Edis said: "You were looking for a victim from whom you could take money that would get you home and pay for a prostitute.

"That's why you went to this park wasn't it?"

Connor replied: "No."

Connor admits to hitting Dr Gulamhuseinwala with a 5kg metal pole but denies intending to rob or murder him.

Paton also denies the charges.

Connor told the court he was "wound up" after a woman posing a prostitute stole £100 from him in Soho.

He said the pair then wandered aimlessly around London, snorting cocaine, before ending up in Green Park.

Connor admitted taking out his "frustration" at having his money stolen on Dr Gulamhuseinwala.

However, Mr Edis showed the jury CCTV footage of Paton and Connor and described them walking purposefully towards Green Park from Soho after they had lost their money.

In one sequence, Connor could be seen throwing a punch into the air.

Describing the pair's actions after the incident, Mr Edis said: "Neither of you used a phone box to make a 999 call, did you? Did it occur for you to do that?"

Connor replied: "No, not that night it didn't."

Mr Edis continued: "You didn't lift a finger for him. You left him for dead."

The court also saw CCTV video of Paton counting cash after the incident, before the pair spent £40 of their alleged victim's money on a prostitute.

The case continues.
