PIN badges depicting a landmark building in each of London’s 32 boroughs and the City of London will soon be on sale across central London.
The leaders of each of the London boroughs was presented with their badge by Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) at a meeting of the London Councils.
Residents from each borough chose their favourite landmark from a shortlist of four, to be recreated on the badges.
In Bexley, people had the choice of Danson House, Crossness Beam Engine House, Hall Place and the Red House, and they chose Hall Place.
Lord Coe said: “These pin badges are a fantastic way to showcase to the UK and to the rest of the world what a wonderful city London is, and I am delighted to see how proud people are of their city and specific borough.
“I hope they will wear their pin badges with pride.”
The badges will be on sale at the Museum of London, Runner’s Need and Crest of London outlets across London, and World Duty Free at UK airports.
Bromley residents chose Crystal Palace transmitting station and park. It is now the site of the BBC’s main broadcast tower in London, built in the 1950s. The athletics stadium within the grounds, hosts international track and field competition.
The Old Royal Observatory was the choice for Greenwich. Home of Greenwich Mean Time, it is famous as the source of the prime meridian line, dividing east from west (longitude 0° 0' 0''). The observatory galleries unravel time, space and astronomy, while in the planetarium visitors can explore the heavens.
The collection of Victorian tea trader Frederick John Horniman is now housed in the Horniman Museum, which will feature on Lewisham's pin badge. He began collecting specimens, musical instruments and artefacts from around the world in the 1860s, and the growing collection was moved to the bespoke museum in 1901.
