Beckenham Crematorium and Cemetery will clear up mess

MYSTERY surrounds heaps of dumped grave ornaments which have been discovered outside a cemetery.

A concerned dog walker contacted your favourite local newspaper after discovering hundreds of vases, flower pots, ornaments and flowers dumped on an embankment in Elmers End.

News Shopper investigated and found the items, normally decorating burial and rememberance plots at Beckenham Crematorium and Cemetery, had been carelessly thrown over the cemetery fence.

It is not known who dumped the decorations but the company running the cemetery, Dignity, says it is in the process of clearing the area.

ELMERS END: Mystery over grave decoration fence dump A spokesman said: “We were unaware that these items were there because until recently it was covered by undergrowth and trees.

“Our staff are currently removing the items that can be reached. We are meeting a specialist contractor to arrange clearing the rest of the area.”

He added: “We have spoken to the local neighbourhood police team who have agreed to increase the regularity of patrols within the crematorium and cemetery grounds to try and stop these items being disposed of in this way.”

Last month, we revealed how staff at the cemetery in Elmers End Road had swept up sentimental ornaments and keepsakes and dumped them in the mud for collection as part of a spring clean.

ELMERS END: Mystery over grave decoration fence dump Many items were broken and bereaved families spoke of their anger at the way their carefully placed ornaments had been treated.

Dignity issued a full apology and said its staff had been retrained.

Brian Sweeney, 72, discovered items were missing from his son’s plot. After complaining to cemetery bosses, he told News Shopper: “This removal of ornaments and other tributes may be necessary but they should have given people a fair bit of notice.”

And after items were taken from her husband’s plot in the memorial garden, Jean Dignum has sent letters of complaint to Dignity.

The 72-year-old said: “I do not believe these were actions of a sensitive and caring organisation.”

Dignity are now trying to weasel their way out of this one by trying to blame a criminal act by outsiders for it.
“We have spoken to the local neighbourhood police team who have agreed to increase the regularity of patrols within the crematorium and cemetery grounds to try and stop these items being disposed of in this way.”
How are we supposed to believe this given Dignity's previous indescretions.

'MYSTERY surrounds heaps of dumped grave ornaments'. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The pile of rubbish look like a load of broken plastic plant pots, and very tatty plastic flowers! It's called fly tipping rather then items decorating burial and rememberance plots.

It does not take a genius to work out who dumped it there given that the cemetary is next door.

No Ruth Rendall "mystery" here im afraid NS.

There has to be a clear out of old rubbish every now and then. There really should be some regulations regarding what people can and can't leave at gravesides. In the past I have seen muliticoloured windmills (not on children's graves before anyone says otherwise), wind chimes and ghastly faded plastic flowers in abundance and all this tat really does look a mess. A simple bouquet of fresh flowers is quite sufficient to show respect and it is not necessary to turn cemetaries into theme parks resembling crazy golf courses.

I agree 100 % with you my nan was a keen Gardner that's why we buried her here, I am sure the company and the management would not be so careless as to dump rubbish over a fence ... When they spend so much time clearing it all away.... LOL .... they are in a no win situation with some people.... How ever if they are guilty of it then they should be dealt with but I find it highly unlikely that they are.... and I see newshopper never printed my letter

these items were not thrown over the cemetary fence, they are still in the cemetary, just hidden behind a bank, created by cemetary staff. the boundary for the cemetary is the river that joins the country park.Dignity Please do not blame others for your disrespect in disposing of unwanted items in this way. the extra patrols you have requested will take police and community officers from other more important duties.

I really feel for these families. However, sometimes the graves can start looking tatty. My daughter is buried in the baby section of a council owned cemetery. It clearly states in the deeds that windmills etc are prohibited for health and safety reasons. In the baby section, these rules are broken, and there are lots of windmills, wind chimes, solar lanterns, toys etc. But like I said, this is a baby section. Nobody seems to mind and the area is fenced off. The grave next to my daughter is never tended to, but has all sorts of bits and bobs that get blown everywhere when its windy. This is very annoying, and I end up tidying this grave on a fortnightly basis. I dont mind, because after all this is the grave of a baby. But I can sympathise with others who do not want the tat. I sympathise with the managers who have to the task of keeping relatives happy and maintaining a tidy environment. If everyone looked after the graves there would be no problem. If you are unable to, then its best that you put in some seasonal bulbs and leave it to nature.

Theres no mystery about this.

The Staff have simply Dumped the items, because it is/was easier than actually moving them to the Bins.

Likely as not it is cheaper as well.

Why are the Police now involved & increasing patrols, it doesn`t take a genius to work it out....If the Police were really interested they`d be looking to Investigate & take action about the Criminal Damage to property that Barry Carr (Site Manager) & His Staff committed in removing People`s belongings without their permission, giving No Notice & not keeping them safe. Just my opinion.

As far as I understand things, Items removed must be cared for & treated carefully so as they don`t come to harm? Did they do that? NO!!!

Dignity really need to sort out their recruiting process, how the hell does an Ex-Nightclub manager make a good Cemetery Manager? Maybe Dignity need to hire some Bouncers, Barry would feel right at home.

I really wish I could tell people what I actually know!!!!!!!!!! But I want to protect the Site Staff.....

Grave decorations litter an embankment in Elmers End

Most of the dumped ornaments were flower pots and vases

News Shopper discovered many real and plastic flowers on the bank

The decorations were found just over the fence of Beckenham Crematorium and Cemetery near a public footpath
