String causes woman to trip in Charterhouse Road

A PIECE of string proved to be the “straw that broke the camel’s back” for a street improvement works victim.

Bromley Council contractors had been working outside Pinar Wheeler’s house in Charterhouse Road, Orpington, redoing the pavement by laying bricks.

But when they finished working for the day they did not remove the string they had put up to make sure the pavement was level.

Mrs Wheeler was on the way out of her house to pick up a prescription when she tripped over the string.

The teaching assistant said: “It was an absolute death trap.

“When I had to step on the aggregate stones I caught the string with my left leg and I came crashing down and I put my hand out on the crash barrier.

“I was shaking from head to foot.”

She added: “Anybody who came up the path was at risk of crashing their skull on the front of the path.

“I think it is just ridiculous the way they do not take pedestrian safety into any consideration.”

But the 51-year-old says her problems began when council contractors started working in the road last September.

During works to build a mini roundabout she says the only way to get into her house was by clambering over a 2ft brick wall to avoid getting stuck in wet cement.

And at the start of her pavement works the teaching assistant could not put her bins out outside her home because the area was cordoned off with barriers.

Mrs Wheeler said: “The final straw when I fell over was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

The mother-of-two was visited by representatives from the contractor Conway shortly after the incident to talk about what happened.

A Bromley Council spokesman said: “Safety matters are obviously important and whilst we apologise for any inconvenience caused, this was an isolated incident which is being investigated to see if there are things that we can learn.”

Surely she should either speak to the Council and/or a solicitor - why has she gone running to the NewsShopper?

Oh come on, stop stringing us along. How much are you going to claim for? Enough for a nice holiday or a new car? It's a bit like asking, 'how long's a piece of string?'.

Another case of no win, no fee at its best. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself down and start all over again. Perhaps in future you will be a little more 'stringent' when it comes to looking out for green twine.

This is obviously an attempt to get some compensation, she has gone to the paper and I wouldnt mind betting she has already phoned 'Injury Lawyers 4U' and has been advised to get the incident as well documented as she can.
This is another non story NewsShopper, this paper is quickly going from a medium to report local events and news to a forum where people care simply air their grievances about nothing in particular, like being headbutted by a dog or forgetting where you had parked you car (All reported this week in this paper)

well it doesn't look like she could claim for much considering she didn't break a bone, she didn't have time off work nor has she suffered any psychiatric harm from her fall. As a result she would only be able to claim for a maximum of a couple of hundred pounds for pain if she was lucky.

I'm concerned about this 2ft wall that she had to "climb" over. Come on love - a one legged dog could quite easily hop over that! Unless my eyes deceive me, she is not one of the Borrowers!

“It was an absolute death trap." This is a normal piece of string we are talking about right? Not some modified barbed string with 10 000 volts running through it. Mrs Wheeler is an attention seeking, money grabbing fraud. I hope she doesnt get a penny.
