MOVE over Morecambe and Wise, Hale and Pace and the Two Ronnies - Bromley's councillors could be about to steal the show.
In view of the looming local elections, Bromley Council will tonight (March 11) discuss how to successfully initiate the fresh batch of budding politicians.
And the local authority’s Constitution Improvement Working Group has suggested employing a buddy system where new councillors are taken under the wing of more experienced election winners.
It has been suggested those successful at the 2006 ballots would prove the most helpful.
Biggin Hill councillor Julian Benington was elected four years ago. The Tory said: “I would be happy to help.
“The workings of the council are complicated and it is nice to have someone to look after you.
“It’s quite scary when you’re first elected.”
It is anticipated the scheme would cost nothing to introduce.
However, before any councillors are paired up a special induction will see new members pose for photographs, set up IT accounts, and receive a welcome pack.
The local authority says it is “vital” these tasks are completed by May 7, the day after the scheduled local elections.
A report into the plans states optimistically: “The presence of all councillors at the civic centre for the local election count should allow this process to run quickly and efficiently.”
Elected in 2006, Tory Petts Wood and Knoll councillor Simon Fawthrop added: “It’s a great idea. My top tip would be never forget your constituents - they’re the ones who got you here!”
