THE President of South Africa made a visit to Catford as part of his state visit to the UK.

Jacob Zuma attended Lewisham Town Hall in Catford yesterday (March 4) to join a round table discussion about Lewisham Council’s youth projects.

The President chose to visit Lewisham because the borough has a strong link with South Africa.

In 2002 Lewisham and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa signed a friendship agreement to signify their commitment to working together and mutual cooperation.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a former resident and curate in the borough, was awarded Freeman of the Borough of Lewisham in 1990.

Mr Zuma also visited Sainsbury’s supermarket in Greenwich to see the range of African produce.

The controversial African leader has been married five times, has 20 children and has endured a turbulent political and personal past.

Mr Zuma became president in 2009.
