YOUNG people will be stepping back in time to interview survivors of the Blitz as part of a theatre project.
The Grandchildren of the Blitz group will be run by the London Bubble Theatre Company, supported by a £50,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Youngsters will use the memories of elderly residents in Deptford to form the script of a play, helping people today understand how the conflict changed people’s lives and the areas around London’s docks.
Those taking part will also research the period with help from people a the Imperial War Museum and British Library.
Before performances take place next year, presentations will be given to pensioners in Rotherhithe, Bermonsey and Deptford.
Company creative director Jonathan Petherbridge said: “We’re aiming to bring young people and elders together to meet and talk about a period that changed our area for ever.”
