BEXLEY Amateur Boxing Club had a disappointing return from last weekend's challenge tournament in Glasgow.

The club challenged some of Scotland's finest at Tweedy Halls, in Linwood, but lost six-three in controversial circumstances, according to coach John Gristey.

"I though Dick Turpin only got as far north as York," quipped Gristey.

"Don't get me wrong, they put on a lovely show for us and the hospitality was second to none, but there was a few bouts the judges got wrong.

"In my opinion, there was no way Charlie Brambatt lost his bout to Paul Appleby, it was daylight robbery. There was a couple of others we shouldn't have lost, but that's life.

"One of the highlights of the evening was Tommy Finnegan beating James Spence, from Forgewood ABC, who had only lost one of his 24 previous fights before that. And Jamie Hughes beat Liam Gallagher from Forgewood, who was a former Scottish schoolboy champion.

"Otherwise, it was a great experience for the boys and it was good trip and the people of Glasgow made us feel really welcome and we hope to invite the Scottish boys in the not too distant future."

Two exhibition bouts with no winners or losers were also staged. They were at under-40kg class between Bexley's Jack Dishart, who is 12, and Harry Barrey, 12, from Bellahouston ABC, and at under-51kg level between Tommy Paintin, 12, from Bexley ABC and Dunfermline ABC's 12-year-old Tommy Cannon, 12, Meanwhile, the Bexley club held a charity boxing bash in aid of the mayor's soft-play charity last week.

The bouts, held at Hurstmere School, in Sidcup, raised more than £900.

The fight of the evening was between Bexley's highly-rated Charles Brambatt, who is 19, and Chadd ABC's Peter Walkman, 26.

Bexley coach John Gristey said: "It was a top quality bout. Although the ex-soldier from Derbyshire was tough, Brambatt was the better of the two.

"He caught Walkman with a couple of southpaws in the third round. Walkman did catch Brambatt with a couple of punches but you can't go out in the rain without getting wet can you?"

Gristey added the night had been a great success despite the club only winning six of the 15 bouts.

"He said: "None of the boys let the club down. In the bouts the boys did lose, the decision was that tight you could have tossed a coin."
