THREE girl guides have been nominated for a Green Guardian Concept award after designing a dome for their park.

Elea York, aged 13, Ellie Marsh, aged 12 and 11-year-old Jessica Limpkin, members of the 3rd New Eltham Guides, designed their ‘bio-dome’ to house tropical plants and feature a tree top activity area.

The guides had taken part in a design project organised by The Young Friends of Avery Hill Park.

Working with Greenwich University architecture lecturers, students and leaders of Avery Hill Youth Club, the girls decided to design a dome to educate people about climate change.

The tree top area would feature a giant obstacle course up in the branches using ladders, walkways, bridges and tunnels.

Guide assistant leader Bee Twidale explained: “This would enable visitors to view the ecosystems high up in the tree canopy which are ordinarily out of sight from the ground.

“It would demonstrate that different organisms can live in different parts of the same tree and all co-exist in harmony.”

It would also feature birdwatching, with the dome being home to many species whose habitats are threatened by climate change.

The dome would also contain butterflies and plants at risk from the effects of global warming.

Information points in the dome would inform visitors how dependent we are on plants and trees, not just because they help recycle CO2.

Ms Twidale said: “They would like the world to be more interested in climate change.

“Since it is the younger generation who will have to experience its effects, the guides thought it important this generation are fully aware of the issues.”
