STUDENTS at one of the largest secondary schools in the country are fundraising for an ambitious project which will see a new school built in Africa.
The young people from Bexleyheath School in Woolwich Road, Bexleyheath, are aiming to raise £22,000 for the project in Kenya which will see the school built and equipped, in a remote village.
Project leader and head of Year 8 at the school, Julia Knight said the pupils had been very inventive with their fundraising ideas, but were still looking for other suggestions and any donations from the local community.
Student Alex Webb, 16 and drama teacher Steven Fry raised more than £300 when they did a sponsored bungee jump in December.
Another £300 was raised at a fancy dress Halloween disco for the 11 and 12-year-old pupils.
One of their most ambitious fundraisers will be a gala ball at Bexleyheath’s Marriott Hotel in May and they are looking for donations of high quality items to be auctioned at the event.
The students are also planning a sponsored Row to Kenya in which the whole school will take part, a fancy dress sponsored walk and they will be bag packing at Bexleyheath Sainsbury’s until the end of March.
Pupils are also collecting CDs and DVDs for recycling and collecting clothing which will be given to developing countries, including Kenya, through Bags2Schools.
And in June this year, 19 pupils aged between 15 and 17 will be making the trip to Kenya for the project.
If anyone would like to donate cash or gifts to the project, or unwanted clothing CDs or DVDs, call Miss Knight at the school on 020 8303 5696.
