EFFORTS are underway to raise £500,000 to restore a 380-year-old church.

A parish church has been on the site of St Luke’s in Charlton Church Lane for more than 800 years.

The current building was built in 1630 but fundraisers say it had fallen into severe disrepair over the years.

Spencer Perceval, the only British Prime Minister to be assassinated, is buried in the vault of the church and there is a memorial to him on the west wall.  The 200th anniversary of his assassination will be in 2012.

Fundraising will begin with a candlelight classical music concert on January 30 from 7.30pm.

Tickets are £10 which includes a glass of wine and canapés.

To book in advance call Margaret Massey on 020 8853 3840, or alternatively tickets are also available on the door.
