THAMESMEAD: City Airport expansion campaign goes to High Court

CAMPAIGNERS have taken a step forward in their fight against an airport expansion.

Fight the Flights is opposing the expansion of London City Airport and has been given the go ahead to take its legal challenge against Newham Council, which approved the plans, to the High Court.

It claims the council failed to consult other local authorities and their residents over the expansion, which would see flights rise from 80,000 to 120,000 per year.

Bexley Council and Erith and Thamesmead MP John Austin have previously tried and failed to have the plans called in by the Secretary of State because of concerns over increased low-flying planes over Thamesmead.

The group’s solicitor Phil Michaels said: “We are delighted that the court has agreed that this case needs to be heard.

“The issues raised are important for people and for the environment more widely. We look forward to the case being heard later this year.”
