WEATHER: Latest on snow, travel warnings, MP condemns train company

THE reduced train timetable which has been in place for the last two days will continue tomorrow, Southeastern has announced.

A statement on the company's website says: "Freezing temperatures, snow and ice have been forecast over the next few days.

"To ensure we’re able to run the best service possible in these weather conditions a revised metro and mainline timetable is currently in place."

Meanwhile the Met Office is warning residents in north Kent and London to take extra care today and tomorrow in extremely icy conditions.

Widespread ice is expected on roads and pavements over the next few days as yesterday's snow turns to dangerous ice.

Short but heavy snow showers could still hit parts of north Kent and south-east London throughout this evening, but showers are not expected to be as heavy as yesterday.

These showers could continue until tomorrow lunchtime.

In travel news, MP for Greenwich and Woolwich Nick Raynsford has condemned the poor train services provided by Southeastern today and yesterday.

The company, along with Southern trains has been running a reduced service to cope with the severe weather conditions.

In a letter he sent yesterday to Southeastern managing director Charles Horton, he said: "This morning there were no problems with buses running through Greenwich and Woolwich.

"The DLR was running without delays and the Jubilee line through North Greenwich was running without incident.

"I understand from TfL that de-icing trains were run on overground tube lines to lessen the impact of the weather on the underground network.

"You will, therefore, understand my dismay at hearing that trains run by Southeastern through the borough on metro services were at a frequency of two per hour during rush hour despite the relatively light snow fall in south-east London on the night of January 5.

He added: "I am also quite taken aback to hear from Mike Gibson at Southeastern that the last train to Greenwich tonight will depart at 19.51.

WEATHER: Big freeze on its' way

"Given that other forms of transport were running without problems it is unfortunate overground rail services were the weak link in the network.

"Following the disruption from the snow last February I would have hoped that appropriate contingency plans would be in place to deal with snowfall to keep the network running.

"Given that the cold snap is forecast to continue for some time I hope Southeastern will put a plan into place to keep the network running throughout the winter.”

A spokesman for Southeastern responded by saying: “Since yesterday Southeastern has been operating an amended timetable as a result of the severe weather conditions. The decision to do this was based on advice from Network Rail who is responsible for maintaining the network and determining what services can operate.

"The snow and ice has caused disruption to services, electrical damage to some trains and difficulties for staff getting to work on untreated roads.

"Whilst we understand that the introduction of an amended timetable has meant inconvenience to our passengers it has allowed us to deploy some of our resources to the operation of trains which have kept rails free of ice.

"This has supported Network Rail’s efforts to keep the network open through the operation of specialist de-icing vehicles.

"Despite the freezing temperatures our joint efforts have ensured that the majority of passengers are able to get to and from work.

"We told passengers of our intention to operate a revised timetable as soon as possible and have kept people updated through, texts, emails, station notices, on board announcements and station announcements as well as providing extra staff at stations and keeping the media informed.

"We are more than happy to explain all of these issues to Mr Raynsford directly and explain the efforts that our staff are making to maintain services in exceptionally difficult circumstances.

"The revised timetable remains in place today and tomorrow and we are asking passengers to check with National Rail Enquiries for information on their journeys over the next few days.”

In other travel news the M20 is closed London bound between junctions 8 and 7 due to a jack-knifed lorry.

The M20 coastbound between junctions 8 and 9 is now down to one lane due to debris from an earlier incident.

I walked down to Greenhithe at quarter to 8 this morning. The station was packed people had been there since before 7am saying that not one train had come through. Every London Bound Train had delayed. A reduced service, this morning it was no service. I understand there was a train stuck at gillingham with a fault in it. Just lately it seems all southeasterns trains have faults on them. They can increase fares but what sort of service do we get back. Its not like I can drive to dartford as the development I live on has not been gritted and the roads are deadly. I can't afford to take tomorrow off work too. If I have to I will walk To Dartford. It just amazes me how much trouble snow can cause!

Are the SE managers in a different part of the country, looks like it the way they are handling this. The service is worse than they provide on a Sunday. A train went to Hayes just after 8am this morning, and was packed by the time it got back to the Beckenham area, someone said it was the first that anyone had seen since 7am. They sent passengers to London Bridge last night to catch the 6pm train only to cancel it. Dartford is getting at least 6 trains an hour - other stations more! Why is the Hayes line always left out - they have always treated it badly.

I live close to Lewisham station.

I think it's strange Southeastern are unable to maintain a scheduled timetable yet freight trains have been thundering through Lewisham more or less as usual?

Yeah I noticed that Freight trains are still going fine through Greenhithe too. I could understand running a reduced service to prevent delays and cancellations but its just made it worse. How are they not able to get the first train out at 7:11am??? I cant understand it and the logic of "we don't want to take people up to london and not be able to get them back" that just doesn't make sense. You are taking people into london and getting them stuck there by cancelling trains! If I am missing something really simple please tell me the error of my ways but I just don't understand?

Their website says that the new 'high speed rail link' is running as normal, so we know where their priorities lie!
On the Bexleyheath line, we were meant to have 2 Cannot St and 2 Charing X per hour in the morning rush hour, but then they cancelled all of the Cannon St trains! Also, they've made no attempt to grit outside of the station AGAIN. The only time I saw grit there was when it wasn't snowing or icy. We'll need to get our ice skating boots out again!

What a nightmare,i can say that if you leave after 9 your get on a train and your get a seat and get in to london in 40 mins, coming home late afternoon was'nt as goods as trains jammed packed.I can't believe we have another saturday service tomorrow, being a pregnant lady this is'nt much fun plus the skating on ice . We should have a normal services tomorrow, poor excuses.Thats my rant over with

It is a pretty appalling service, which just compounds my anger after the timetable renovation, which i've yet to find an individual happy with. Is anyone in the News Shopper area?
I maybe being cynical, but is it not just a sly attempt that to avoid paying out the season ticket discount. The less trains timetabled run, the less chance of dropping below their necessary punctuality percentage?

pumpkinpie, Greenhithe says...
4:07pm Thu 7 Jan 10

What makes me laugh is my partner pointed out that on the handouts they were giving out last night at dartford and on the website they said the revised timetable has been done at no extra cost to the ticket payer! Ah so I guess we have one thing to be grateful for.

Only two trains through Ladywell before 10am today. I knew the next one would be jammed (confirmed by someone's post) so went by bus to Lewisham (no problem), DLR to Heron Quays (no problem), Jubilee Line to Green Park (no problem).
Tonight people were left on the platform at London Bridge as the train was already packed!
By the way, as part of the train leasing agreement, doesn't Southeastern have to pay a mileage charge on each train unit? Less units in service = less mileage charge = more profit for Southeastern?
And don't get me started on the doing away of the Cheap Day return!!

Everyone is moaning about the trains and the delays but everyone knew that it was going to be a bad journey and that no trains were going to London before 9.30, there was even signs a Hayes Station. People should have told their bosses that they were going to be late or take a day off as annual leave. Just relax and enjoy the snow. Everyone will be moaning that the trains are too hot in the summer!!!

GODUPERE2, SIDCUP says...

We pay these people extortionate rates to run a service, if they can run a train at 9.30 why cant they run it at 7.30 and why are they finishing at 2000 hrs, complete B*&&$*S that what it is. Its 2010 and trains shouldnt be bloody hot in the summer. 12 hundred quid a year they charge and they cant run a train cos its cold, there isnt even much snow!!!!!!!!!!!

It's the weekend and they are running a normal Saturday and Sunday service. Why could they not do this for metro services during the week and if the problems are further out then slot the delayed trains in where time allows - other Companys did this! They have come out with a statement about difficulties and less trains allowing them to recover if they get stuck, be interesting to see the figures on how many got stuck. It's snowing now does that mean they will have to resort to an emergency timetable?

What I've found particularly interesting is that since the weather got a bit dodgy the section of their website talking about their punctuality figures has disappeared, it's been missing for a month now!
How strange...
Here's an idea News Shopper. Rather than pop this story up here and be done with it, perhaps you could actively talk with Southeastern on your readers behalf. This is a matter close to many reader's hearts, and we'd be grateful if you were to put these concerns of hours to the company.

I fully agree with comments relating to changed timetable introduced in Dec 09. How can S Eastern mutilate an already stretched service, people are now travelling in much worse conditions in peak times with less choices from Bexley Sidcup to London. This needs to be raised and highlighted at a level beyond individual blogs and comments and News Shopper is in a prime position to do this. I am sure a petition at any station at peak time would reveal the frustrations and anger being felt by the fare paying public who simply want a fair service for a fair fayre, is that too much to ask? Services should be getting better not worse.
