SCHOOLS are being encouraged to become fairtrade.

The Fairtrade organisation guarantees a better deal for over 7 million farmers and workers in the developing world by ensuring they receive a fair price for the goods they produce.

To be recognised as Fairtrade schools, organisers need to create a steering group.

The group should create a policy, putting in writing the school’s decision to become Fairtrade, and create chances for pupils to learn about the issues involved.

And there should be a commitment to selling, promoting and using Fairtrade products.

Two schools - John Roan in Maze Hill and Thomas Tallis in Kidbrooke - have already begun their preparations.

Co-chairman of Greenwich’s Fairtrade network Councillor John Fahy said: “I would like to encourage all of our schools to consider the possibility and play their part in improving the lives of others less fortunate than us.”
