A WIZARD of Oz themed art competition has seen school pupils awarded prizes by pantomime stars.

Gravesham Council invited seven schools across the borough to create sculptures inspired by the musical film, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

A stage version of the film is this year’s pantomime at Woodville Halls in Gravesend, and its three stars awarded free tickets as well as art equipment to the creators of the best sculptures.

TV stars David Spinx, Laura Hamilton and Gabrielle Bradshaw gave the prizes to students from St John’s Catholic Primary School, Thamesview Secondary School and Rosherville Primary School on Wednesday.

A council spokeswoman said: “The young artists impressed Gravesham’s panto stars with the high level of their work, and the winning sculptures will be displayed at the theatre throughout panto season.”
