AN APPLE tree has been planted at a school as a symbol of opposition to the third runway at Heathrow airport.
Kelvin Grove School, Kirkdale Road, Sydenham, has planted a Cox apple tree in it’s allotment, which used to be a car park.
Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock, Councillor Alex Feakes, Councillor Chris Phillips and members of Greenpeace attended the tree planting ceremony.
Sipson village is threatened with demolition if the proposed third runway at Heathrow airport goes ahead.
Planting of the tree at the school shows the residents of Sipson they have support across the country.
Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said: "I was delighted to be able to be part of the Greenpeace Tree Planting event.
"It was great to see members of the local community coming together to make a positive and symbolic stand against further airport expansion."
Kate Shipp of Greenpeace said: “Kelvin Grove School has an excellent environmental record and has made the extraordinary step of digging up the car park and replacing it with an allotment.
“The very opposite of what the government have proposed for Heathrow.”
