GREENWICH has shown the biggest improvement in recycling out of all the London boroughs, figures show.

The percentage of household waste sent for recycling in the borough went up from 29 per cent last year to 42 per cent this year, statistics from the Department for Environment Farming and Rural Affairs show.

And the borough is the second best performer in England and Wales for cutting back on landfill, sending just three per cent of household waste there.

The council claims the improved rates are partly down to its recent recruitment drive, hiring 250 staff to make the borough cleaner and greener.

It also says the figures show its three bin refuse collection system is making a difference.

Council greener Greenwich cabinet member Councillor Rajwant Sidhu said: “We’re really proud of our green credentials here in Greenwich and with residents help would like to keep on getting even better.”
