NEWS Shopper has launched a new competition for the area's councillors called How Green Is Your Council Leader?

In last week's edition we heard from the Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock who spoke of his sadness at seeing the decline of the north American passenger pigeon.

This week we put the same questions to Bromley Council leader, Councillor Stephen Carr.

The winning answers will be judged by News Shopper's Green Household Champion Elizabeth Greenwood, who has made many environmentally friendly changes to her Chislehurst bungalow including installing solar panels.

At the end of the series she will present the champion council leader with a special secret prize.

1. What do you do to help the environment?

I am an enthusiastic recycler, pick up rubbish when and where I can, and have become a complete bore about turning lights off which have been left on

2. In one sentence, how would you encourage residents to be green?

I would certainly not start preaching to residents but simply point out the benefits of a clean environment and how it is possible to save money for themselves and the borough as whole, by for example, recycling as much as they can

3. How many cars do you own and what are they?

I do not currently have a car

4. How far do you have to travel to work?

One or two miles

5. How do you get to work?

Walk or bus

6. How many miles a year do you drive?

Very few

7. Do you own a bike?

Yes

8. What changes have you made to your house to save energy?

Wearing more clothes instead of putting on the heating

9. If you could make one change to make the world a greener place, what would it be?

Stop building so many houses

10. If you could bring back one extinct animal, what would it be and why?

Not so much extinct, but would love to see all those beasts that once roamed the British Isles, such as the bear for example, back and thriving
