BARNEHURST & DARTFORD: Puppy raises alarm after tree fall death

A MUM-OF-TWO lost her life after a tree collapsed in high winds - despite the best efforts of the family puppy who managed to find its way home to raise the alarm.

Pamela Davey was walking eight-month-old puppy Brody through Barnehurst Golf Course on Saturday afternoon (November 14) when the 53-year-old was tragically hit by a falling 60ft poplar tree near the second hole.

Incredibly, black labrador Brody ran a mile back to the family home in nearby Manor Way and alerted Ms Davey’s daughter.

Ms Davey’s estranged husband Les said: “My wife and the dog went out for walk together but Brody came back by himself and started whimpering at the front door.

“My daughter then called me and said Pam was missing. I came straight over from Dartford and began the search.

“If Pam had been injured but alive we would have found her thanks to Brody.

“Within 30 minutes of him whining at the door I had found her.

“If it wasn’t for the dog we wouldn’t have found Pam so quickly - it was just a tragedy there was nothing anybody could have done.”

Police and paramedics

As part of his frantic search, Les says he followed his wife’s usual walk along the public footpath in the golf course and was confronted my paramedics and police who had been tipped off about the accident by a fellow dog walker at around 2pm.

Mr Davey, 59, added: “I spent five and half hours with my wife’s body waiting for the coroner.

“I was talking to her, asking her why she had bought the dog, that sort of thing.

“We had never owned a dog before and she never used to walk on the golf course before Brody.”

The couple have been separated for five years and Ms Davey worked at Hadlow College in Tonbridge.

Her funeral will take place at 12.30pm on December 10 at Eltham crematorium.

Mr Davey said his wife had a fun-loving attitude with a passion for netball, spending time as a coach and umpire at Crayford Arrows netball club.

The construction foreman from Burnham Road, Dartford, added: “She was so well liked and a very kind, loving person. She will be missed by everyone who knew her."
