A GROUP of Guides in Bexley have been taking part in an event to break a Guinness world record and do something about world poverty.

The 3rd Bexleyheath West Guides were among more than 173 million people across 120 countries who recited a pledge demanding their governments eradicate extreme poverty and achieve the eight Millennium Development Goals by the 2015 deadline.

The Guides held their Stand Up,Take Action, End Poverty Now! event because they say they are worried that, with just six years to go to the deadline, no world region is on track to achieve the goals.

After reciting the pledge, the Guides all signed it and have sent it to Bexleyheath and Crayford MP David Evennett and asked him to raise it with the government.

Guider Catherine Breen said: “We want to a message to the world leaders there is huge global demand for eradicating poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals and, with more than 173 million people calling for action, we expect to be heard and for governments to act now.”
