FIREFIGHTERS tackled a huge blaze at a recycling centre in Northfleet yesterday morning.

Six crews were called to Pepperhill Household Waste Recycling Centre in Station Road, Northfleet, at around 6.40am.

They spent more than five hours tackling the flames, which could be seen from the A2.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the fire broke out in a rubbish bay at the depot and the building was heavily smoke logged.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Structural engineers are expected to visit the site later today before the household waste section is reopened to the public.
