Following a first half horror show in their 4-2 defeat away to Romford last Tuesday, VCD put in a fine performance to win 2-0 away at Potters Bar.

Even with severe traffic hampering preparations for the game on Tuesday with five players missing in Danny Penny, Kevin Winchcombe, Meshach Nugent, Chris Tedder and Kane Rice the performance in the first period still came as a shock.

With some fine performances and results of late against table toppers Great Wakering and East Thurrock the Vickers were four days early for the Halloween horror show with a terrible first half showing.

The Romford 'Boro' who have made a number of signings in the last fortnight raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half hour with three very poor goals from a defensive point of view.

The one bright spot of the half was a superbly taken goal by new signing Aaron Firth with a chest and volley from the edge of the box in only his second start for the Vickers.

The second half saw a huge improvement as the Vickers contolled the game at last and laid seige to the Romford goal only for a breakaway goal to be scored following more defensive errors with a comical twist.

New boy Firth capped a creditable display scoring his second of the night with 5 minutes to play getting a head to an excellent James Duckworth cross.

With yet more players missing such as George Mitchell and James Duckworth for the trip to Potters Bar, the task seemed to be all the more difficult but the Vickers character of old returned.

Potters Bar have enjoyed some fine results and with games in hand were eyeing a play off spot in the league but with a reshuffled pack VCD more than deserved their win.

Firth and Huggins continued where they had left off at Romford causing the Bar defence problems and chances fell to Hegley and Winchcombe in the opening 10 mins.

Potters Bar looked threatening on the attack with pace in abundance but at the opposite end they looked likely to concede.

With 25 minutes gone Firth scored his third goal in 2 games with a smart run across the back line where he was picked out expertly by left winger Nick Hegley and with one touch into his stride he finished cooly with his other foot to break the deadlock.

Hegley saw a glancing header just miss the upright from a whipped in Winchcombe cross as the Vickers turned the screw on their hosts who had only threatened from a set piece that had struck the crossbar.

With less than 5 minutes of the half remaining Firth could have added another when he was released following a surging run from Anthony Hogg who slid the ball into his path as he broke free but although his effort beat the keeper it bounced off the post and was cleared off the line by the last defender.

The second half saw a rally from Potter Bar where they found James Tedder in fine form behind a tenacious back four.

Captain Leroy Huggins got his just deserts for a superb display of front play when he rose highest on 86 mins to head home from a Hegley corner with 10 mins to play.

With back to back games in the league at home against Ware and Harlow Town could these three points be a springboard for more points to come?
