A TOWN centre will be turned into a giant advent calendar this December as part of a church’s festivities.

St Alfege Church, in Church Street, Greenwich, has teamed up with schools, pubs and shops to decorate 24 windows.

A window will be unveiled each day in the run-up to Christmas.

This is the third year St Alfege has staged the event and the theme for this Christmas is Cast Away the Dreams of Darkness, a reference to an Advent hymn.

Church vicar the Rev Chris Moody said: “This Advent windows theme is a call to put away the dreams of darkness and look forward, not just with hope, but with a renewed sense of what’s important.”

The Greenwich Tourist Information Centre in Church Street will launch the programme on December 1. Mince pies and mulled wine will be available throughout the day.
