BIGGIN HILL: Teenage biker who died after police chase named
3:00pm Tuesday 27th October 2009
A TEENAGER who died in hospital from injuries sustained in a police chase in Biggin Hill has been named as Lennie Gray.
The boy was being pursued by police as he sped along Leaves Green Road on a motorbike before the officers lost sight of him at around 1.50am this morning (October 27).
When they next saw the youth he was lying on the ground and his green Ninja Kawasaki was further down the road.
They gave him first aid until an ambulance arrived and he was taken to Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough.
He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 3am.
The chase started after officers in a patrol car noticed the teenager speeding along the road along with a rider on a black Gilera Runner 200 scooter.
They turned on their emergency lights and sirens and the scooter driver stopped but the motorcyclist did not.
The youth has not yet been formally identified but his next of kin have been informed.
An inquest will be opened and adjourned in due course.
The Met’s department for professional standards is investigating and the Independent Police Complaints Commission have been informed.

Regarding Chloe's comment, that isn't what I would call an angel. Why does speeding away from the police & getting himself killed (When he could have stopped in the first place) make him an angel?

But, seriously, a police car chasing a motorbike. There's only going to be one winner.
The police DO arrest young people for the smallest reason. I've experienced it with my son, 8 hours at the police station for 'swearing'. No charges were brought. But the officer spend the evening in the station rather than being on the beat!

Also, if those that loved the deceased respect them so much why do they not try and spell their dedications correctly? It would be more of a fitting tribute than the text speak and bad grammar. Straight away it makes one think that the lad that lost his life is a no hoper if his friends can't even spell or talk properly?
I've not written this to insult the lad's family they have enough to deal with right now. But in years to come, when all they have are emailed messages of condolence, it would be more fitting if they were readable.

Lennie is the only one who can take responsibility for his actions on that bike last night, but to call him an angel may be a bit over the top.

How did the pursuit start with a

Does anybody know if either of the bikes were stolen?
Did he have a licence or insurance??
Still sad what ever happened, but the blame must lie with Lennie, he was ridding the bike, he twisted the grip, and paid the ultimate price for not being a skilled enough rider of the bike.

Look, what happened to Lennie was an awful shame, such a waste of life to what looks to be a well loved young man.
However he showed no thought for other road users, i drove home down leaves green road last night at approx 1:00am, with 3 family members one aged 5 had he been flying down at such a speed and hit the car and killing us would he be such an angel then?
I disagree with the police for chasing him at such a speed for what only seems to be a small crime yet why was he running had he just been speeding i know i would have stopped for a speeding offence?
Well whatever happened has, and now RIP young lad. hope our family and friends can all learn that life is too short by this utter waste of a young life. x

The standards may have fallen with the recent recruitment drive, but for people who can barely spell their own names to take the moral high ground over the police is a bit rich. It's not a nasty remark but the truth. The truth can hurt somethimes. Those who are cruel about the lad and his personality deserve to be had a go at but those looking at the facts of the situation are doing nothing more than that. I am sure everyone would wish he was still alive and well and the sad fact is that he isn't so you are not better yourself having a go at those who are looking at the bigger picture and not insulting this young man. Those picking on his poor soul for him as a person derserve to told of by those who knew him well but not those who know and obey the law

I just hope that this serves as a very tragic lesson. I hope those who mention police bullying or police being responsible are just angry and upset rather than really mean it. Very sad indeed

Finally on a different note why is it necessary when people write comments to use "text speech" which most of the time means that your comments are almost unreadable. Lennie and his friend were both speeding when a police car approached from the opposite direction. Naturally, the police officers, doing their job, turned their lights on and turned around. By the time they turned around, the friend had pulled over and Lennie had killed himself. There was no 'chase', and the officers were not at fault. It's these 'bullies' and 'killers' by the way that did their upmost to save Lennie's life before the ambulance arrived.
It's a tragic accident, but responsibility lies solely with Lennie. I feel for his family and friends, but these comments attacking the police are frankly, disgusting.

Just look at the way that moped rider risks his life... He speeds straight out of a T-Junction (Give way situation), the moped rider is on the wrong side of the road too! He's lucky there was no other vehcle coming down the road otherwise he would have been another one of the stupid muppets killed. It's the police's job to pursuit anyone that has made an offence even if it's not a bike involved. There's no way this was the police's fault, it was Lennie's fault & he probably knew he was at risk of coming of that bike!

Also, the fact that some of you made comments about the way Lennie's friends wrote in ''txt speech'' to express how they miss him, is even more worrying. A person has lost their life, and you seem to be focusing yours on such hateful & condescending purposes.

Have you ever seen a 3 Series BMW DIESEL up the arse of a 600cc sports bike? Tortoise and hare spring to mind.
Regretably a young lad died, take a moment for the driver of the police vehicle, witnessing a young lad needlessly die.
Police are human too, he would not have come to work intending to be involved directly/indirectly in the death of a young lad. The whole incident WILL have an effect on them too.

I'm sorry that you have lost your friend but arguing on here is not the best way to show your 'respect' for him. I am also sure that many of you have had negative opinions of people that you have never met. You don't actually need to know someone to form an opinion about the circustances as they were reported in the press.

We live in a society where children especially are fighting for acceptance. For some reason kids have the opinion that being bad is good. Society has drilled this into their uneducated minds. I feel that lennie paid the price for trying to be socially accepted by his piers. If he had not crashed he's friends would be singing his praises for escaping the police. This is a sad truth. All you adults leaving comments, I think you need to realise that these kids are growing up in a world which we left behind! Maybe we are to blame this mess of a society which they are living in.

The police had to pursue this kid as he could have easily killed someone else. It was a selfish and reckless thing to do. But try to separate the boy from the thing he did. Everyone makes mistakes but most people have a chance to learn from them. I'm sorry he didn't have that chance. If friends of his want to remember him, make a commitment to yourselves not to ever do something like this. That way something positive will come out of this.

This just goes to show how sad and unintelligent the people associated with this so called Angel.
Lets just assume the bike is legal and all we are talking about is Traffic offences, how the hell are the Police to know that immediately? ANPR is not fitted on all Police cars, so until they stop him they don't know, I remember several years ago the Police tried to stop a van which made off and it crashed and in the back was a young girl that had been snatched, due to the Police she is alive, if they adhered to some of the moronic comments on here she would be dead.
How did the Police know he wasn't a Heroin supplier dealing to the kids in Biggin Hill or and Armed robber or someone wanted for a serious offence???? they don't know till they are stopped.

1. Lennie himself he should have stopped, he was driving a machine illegally that was far too large for him.
2. His parents, say no more.
3. His so called friends in that the did not persuade him from leaving the bike alone.
So to blame the Police is idiotic....most of these people commented on here are the first to call the Police and winge.
The spelling and grammar on here is appalling and unfortunately does not gain support for dear old Lennie as some people will draw the conclusion he is like them...uneducated and therefore deserves it.

He did wrong yes now everyone is paying for it, he was a young boy who understandabley panicked when the police started chaseing him who wouldnt? and no-one hear can blame his parents for this he was young he liked bikes? so everyone else saying he was on a death maciane is wrong if thats not something you like then why feel the need to then comment about them? things like tis happen you just dont expect to happen to the ones you love so right now is not the time to sit here and discuss him. you all have nothing else to do but be horrible. He was 17 years old, not a baby, he could make his own decisions and although people may have wanted him to get rid of it, the final decision was his, you cannot force someone to do something.

Dose it not occur to you that you have to be 21 and passed a full bike test to ride this bike! Which lends on to insurance, no insurance company would go near a 17 year old and a ninja bike.

If it was his bike then whovever sold it to him carries some blame for selling it without checking he was old enough to legally ride it. Did his parents know he was breaking the law?
If he had borrowed it from a "mate" then that person must shoulder an element of blame?

No. Just face it, he had commited crimes (riding a bike he was not legally allowed to do, therefore was riding without insurance). Which is presumably why he ran from the police (who did not actually chase him). Do doubt his parents are distraught - but could they not accept a small degree of responsibility?
Some of the messages of sympathy have exactly the same style (and errors) which makes me wonder if it is the same person ????

caring enough not to ride a bike without insurance, knowing full well he was riding a bike 4 years too old for him legally.
I was never been in his position, but i have been in the position where a police car had switched on their blue lights and siren and i... indicated, pulled over only to find that it was because my brake light was out.
Like any other law abiding citizen, you stop. Kids of today think their invincible anyone could have been killed on his joyride through biggin hill at speeds that killed himself, why as society do we not learn!

Is it Lennie's fault he is dead? Absolutely. But he was quite clearly a victim of his surroundings - for example his friends who are victims also - lovely you may be, your comments paint an ugly picture of this boy's background and your posts do nothing but destroy any hope that Lennie will be perceived as anything other than an uneducated, badly brought up fool lacking no other ambition other than to break the law.
