BECKENHAM: Teenagers arrested in Ian Baynham Trafalgar Square murder inquiry

THREE teenagers have been arrested in connection with the suspected homophobic murder of a Beckenham man in Trafalgar Square.

Ian Baynham, 62, was attacked as he travelled into London for a night out with a friend on September 25.

The pair were walking past the South African Embassy at around 10.45pm when a woman allegedly shouted homophobic abuse at them.

She was joined by another woman and a man, and the resulting argument saw Mr Baynham, of Gresham Road, Beckenham, punched and kicked.

He died from his injuries on Tuesday (October 13).

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of his death as head injuries.

As part of the murder inquiry, police arrested an 18-year-old man and two girls, both aged 17, in south-east London this morning (October 16).

They remain in custody at separate police stations in south and central London.

Detectives say the 30-year-old man with Mr Baynham, who received only minor injuries, managed to grab one of the woman assailants but a passer-by intervened and she escaped.

The Home Office told News Shopper Mr Baynham was about to start a new job at its UK Border Agency office in Croydon.

Anyone with information on the attack should call the incident room on 020 8721 4868 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

My heart goes out to this poor, poor man and his family and friends.

WHAT IS the matter with society today? Please, please bring in tougher jail terms for mindless, violent crimes like this.

R.I.P Mr Baynham.

Ian was my neighbour in Beckenham for the last 5 years. A truly amazing guy with a brilliant sense of humour who made us all laugh. He loved life and everyone loved him. The street is in total shock; and cannot believe that his has happened to such a loving and friendly guy. I spoke to Ian on the Friday just before he left to catch the train uptown; and he was so excited about his new job which he was going to start on the Monday.

The world is cruel and will be a more lonely place without Ian; however I know he is up there protecting and watching over us!

RIP Ian!! x

It's ironic that people in Trafalgar Square didn't go to assist, except to assist one of the women responsible for the attack. As a gay man myself, albeit an Australian one, I'm not surprised at this elevating of blond females to some pedestal despite their behaviour, and a pop culture that denigrates gay men, will fuel such tragedies. RIP to this poor bloke.
