TV star and radio presenter Jono Coleman doesn't do many things by halves but, as he explains in his new book, Get it Off with Jono Coleman, it is an approach he is trying to take when it comes to food.

Sweet-toothed Jono Coleman enjoys the finer things in life but insists you don't have to give it all up if you want to lose weight, as the Heart 106.2 FM presenter shows in his new book Get it Off with Jono Coleman.

In these celebrity-obsessed days Dr Atkins' name is almost as well-known as that of George Bush, the word diet is becoming more than a little passe.

But Jono's 346 weight-loss tips and his halves-only rule come in a digestible pocket-size book.

He said: "It's a small book which fits in the bag. It's broken up into three bits motivation, movement and munching with lots of tips and bits of advice."

"It even includes an all-important eating-out guide which gives tips on what to order in restaurants including Italian, Indian, French and Chinese restaurants.

"The half," Jono explains, "is if you behave yourself then you can have half a bar of chocolate or half a pint. It's like saying don't be so hard on yourself that you can't ever have treats."

So what treat would Jono choose? Without hesitation he answers: "A bottle of wine orhalf a bottle of wine!" Red or white, he's not choosy and adds "I've got a bit of a sweet tooth. I like chocolate if it's there but I won't go out of my way to buy stuff."

Having won ITV's Celebrity Fit Club in 2002 when he lost four-and-a-half-stone, Jono's currently filming the next one and has already lost two stone. He is also doing some new commercials for his radio show Jono and Harriet for Breakfast which brings in more than two million listeners.

Although Chris Moyles took over from Sarah Cox on the Radio 1 breakfast slot in January this year, Jono does not see him as a rival. "We've got a bigger audience in London than Radio 1 anyway, so Chris Moyles is behind us. The only station in front of us, and we've beaten it once, is Capital. Chris Tarrant is the main rival and he's leaving at the end of March. We'll be going up against Johnny Vaughan."

Which is where the new promotion for the show comes in. And Jono is still confident they can be number one.

"I think it's going to make it easier for us. It depends on what people think of Johnny Vaughan when he comes on radio. He's not really a radio person he was known more from the Big Breakfast and that was three years ago now. It's quite good for us because it means we've got a potential whole new audience. What we find is a lot of people listen to us and Tarrant at the same time they'll channel surf. So if Tarrant's not there we've got a good chance of picking up more audience."

Despite claims Tarrant continued on Capital because he couldn't bear the thought of Jono becoming the number one London breakfast radio presenter, Jono remains complimentary about his rival: "I've always had a lot of respect for the guy. I just think that Tarrant's got 15 years of audience, 15 years of experience. And I think his audience will sadly miss him."

So what is Jono's best advice on dieting? "Stick with it. If you go out and you have a big blow-out dinner or lunch then you're only ever one meal away from getting back on track."

Although he's working hard to get it off and helping others do the same, Jono still wants to see more people like him in showbiz. When asked what he thinks of Michelle winning Pop Idol, he said: "I thought it was great. It was good to see a big girl win. The more big people on TV the better as far as I'm concerned. More like myself Lisa Riley as well. I think it's really good because everybody on TV is so beautiful and they all have a certain look. I just think it's good to have a few more varieties of real people on the telly. And Michelle's got a great voice too."
