UNEMPLOYED people in the borough have been recruited to help clean it cleaner and greener.

So far, 100 people have been hired with Greenwich Council looking to hire another 150.

Just over a quarter of the recruits taken on so far are aged under 25, but the scheme has also recruited a wide range of people of all ages.

They will work for up to 12 months, taking on roles that include environment workers with the Council’s Cleansweep service, supervisor posts and neighbourhood wardens.

They are working in teams, tidying up open spaces, cutting back shrubs and carrying out graffiti removal.

Leader of Greenwich Council Councillor Chris Roberts said: “It is tremendously encouraging to see how many local people we have been able to recruit from the estates and neighbourhoods that have suffered higher levels of unemployment.”
