A COUNCIL is urging everyone to cut their carbon emissions as part of a national climate change campaign.

The 10:10 campaign is a drive to cut carbon emissions by 10 per cent during 2010.

It was launched by the makers of climate change film Age of Stupid.

The film stars Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking why we didn’t stop climate change when we had the chance?

Along with a range of political figures, high-profile names like chef Delia Smith, screenwriter Richard Curtis and housewives’ favourite Colin Firth have already thrown their weight behind the campaign.

Now Greenwich Council has also decided to come on board The council is already a signatory to the Nottingham Declaration which commits the authority to reducing CO2 emissions by 20 per cent by 2010.

Greenwich Council recently bid for £535,614 in Government funding to go towards energy-saving schemes in schools, council and community buildings, aiming to save around 1,800 tonnes of CO2 annually.

Leader of Greenwich Council Councillor Chris Roberts said: “It is vital that we tackle carbon emissions on every level from the design of new buildings in our borough to encouraging our schoolchildren to walk to school – we all have a role to play.

“Joining the 10:10 campaign underlines the council’s determination to take the lead, both through practical measures that we take ourselves, and through the support and encouragement that we can give to individuals and organisations to change their behaviour.”

10:10 has also been backed by the Energy Saving Trust and Carbon Trust which provide advice about energy saving measures through their free helplines and websites.
