PETTS WOOD: Residents angry as new parking restrictions not enforced

RESIDENTS are angry after paying out for a parking permit which is not being enforced.

In August Bromley Council introduced permit holder and pay and display parking in Bluston Parade, just off Petts Wood Road in Petts Wood.

However, since the new regulations have been introduced residents have noticed motorists parking in permit bays and pay and display bays without displaying tickets.

They have also seen parking wardens walking past these cars without issuing fines.

One resident, Carole Hoggan, paid £75 for the annual parking permit and is angry about the situation.

Ms Hoggan said: “It is annoying. They have taken money off the residents and motorists but are not enforcing the new regulations.

“I have seen cars parked without permits and pay and display tickets and traffic wardens just walking past them.

“My other half spoke to a traffic warden and they said they could not issue fines as their machines have not been setup for that road.”

Ms Hoggan also said she would like the council to extend the residents parking permits to make up for the time in which they could have parked without paying for a permit.

The 49-year-old added: “We would like one month’s reimbursement for our parking permit.”

The road has six permit holder bays and a larger designated space along Woodland Way.

There are also 26 pay and display spaces along with two disabled spaces.

Resident Judy Bemrose said: “I came home the other day and there were two cars parked in the permit holder bays without permits.

“People are parking in them and not being ticketed, I think it is disgusting.”

According to street signs, the regulations apply Monday to Saturday, between 8.30am and 6pm, however, this is inconsistent with the information on the pay and display machine which states the time is until 6.30pm.

A council spokesman said: “We do tend to not enforce parking restrictions within the first four weeks of a scheme going live.

“This is to give motorists the chance to get used to and understand the new restrictions.”

The spokesman confirmed the discrepancy between the signage and pay and display machine and said this will be changed.

I sympathise having several times asked to get cars that were blocking our drive 'ticketted' but it seems the wardens just cannot be bothered to walk a hundred yards from their 'rich picking' in Station Square to help out the local residents. Which to me says it all about their raison d'etre!

The bottom line is, as it has always been, the fact that there are far too many 4x4s taking up all the parking spaces in Petts Wood.

The wardens are quick enough to patrol the roads around the Walnuts sports centre at ridiculous times - 8.30pm not uncommon, in order to catch out people who have dared to park their cars with 2 wheels on the pavement in an area not used by pedestrians in order to be able to use (and spend money) in the council run leisure centre... as has been mentioned above, their primary concern is hitting their targets. Highly irritating.

Station Square and Petts Wood Rd (Bluston parade) are for shoppers. If you dont like this, Dont live above a shop. Incidently, the council has completely messed up the whole parking. There are less spaces and wasted spaces. Parking should have been free but a max stay of 2 hrs. Dont they want people to visit Petts Wood?

Consider people may live above a shop because it's the only affordable housing available - and no I don't live above a shop myself...
