A caring bus driver has been praised by passengers for going the extra mile.

Users of the 318 bus, which runs from Abbots Langley to Watford Town Centre, have applauded driver Peter Gilbert for “going over and above the call of duty”.

They say “thoughtful” Peter does everything to make sure their journeys are as “comfortable” as possible and even helps older passengers on and off the bus.

Lynn Miller of South Way says he is more than just a driver and is simply “excellent”.

Lynn, owner of Desire and Design in Abbots Langley High Street, said: “He is particularly helpful to older people. He always checks if they are ok.

“He is so good to everyone. He waits if he sees someone is running a little late and helps passengers get on and off with their trolleys.”

Pensioner Joe Campbell and wife Margery of South Way use the bus twice a day.

Joe, 83, said: “He is a great guy. He is so helpful and cheerful. In fact all the bus drivers are. They always ask to check we can get on alright.

Another passenger added: “He always waits until we’re settled before he drives off. Peter is very courteous and has a pleasant greeting for everyone. He is a sincere bloke.”

Peter, of William Street, in North Bushey, has been a bus driver for the past seven years.

Overwhelmed with the passengers' comments he said: “It’s just me. I’m very much a people person.

“The elders deserve respect. I enjoy coming to work. Every day is a different day and all my passengers are so nice which is why I love my job.”

He is spoilt daily with sweets, chocolates, fruit and a range of other goodies from kind passengers wanting to show their appreciation.

Peter, who has never had a day off sick while working for Mullany’s Coach company, said the hardest part of the job was remembering everyone’s names.

He added: “We are like a family. Passengers tell me when they are not getting on so I know not to worry or if they are running late I will wait for them. We all look out for each other.”
