BELVEDERE: Thieves steal drain covers

PEOPLE are being urged to keep a lookout for thieves stealing drain covers following a spate of thefts.

Eight gulley covers have been removed from the streets of Belvedere and Crayford in recent days, creating a major safety hazard for pedestrians and drivers.

Last year more than 100 covers were stolen from across the borough, costing more than £25,000 to replace.

The industrial cast-iron grids are used to cover surface water drains in the roads but thieves take them to sell for scrap.

Bexley Council is concerned that if the culprits are not caught quickly, someone may be seriously injured by falling or driving into an exposed drain.

The council recently sprayed all its gulley covers with permanent blue or green paint, so they can be easily identified if someone tries to sell them.

To report further incidents call the Council on 020 8303 7777.

"The council recently sprayed all its gulley covers with permanent blue or green paint, so they can be easily identified if someone tries to sell them." Does the council honestly believe that a) paint cannot be removed and b) anyone interested in receiving stolen manhole covers would worry in the first place? I don't think the thieves would exactly try to sell their 'goods' at boot-sales, do you? Deary, deary me.

Why is it a good place to start? I have already explained that paint can be removed etc. "... just need to do something more about it." Thanks for your contribution, even though it it was absolutely in no way helpful or constructive.

As it was me who contacted Bexley council before 7am to notify them of the gullies missing in Belvedere and got a thankyou message at the end of the day confirming the arrests, I can tell you that the police raided 'the usual suspects' immediately before they knew what had hit them. I guess that if things move quickly the paint is effective. If we don't report these thefts ASAP it might not be.
