The colourful smells and sights of autumn were blooming in Bovingdon on Saturday.

A total of 37 entrants, of which seven were children between the ages of four and 11, displayed items at the Bovingdon and District Horticultural Show.

Vegetables, fruits, dahlias, chrysanthemums and home cooking were just some of the delights on show in the Memorial Hall.

Show secretary John Walker said: “We had a super day with a good turnout. We were delighted to receive entries from Waterside County Community School for the first time. It is such a thrill to receive entries from younger people.

“The weather had produced an outstanding harvest for vegetables enabling a huge variety of entries.

“We have always received a high standard of entries in the flowers, floral arts and cooking and this year was no exception with wonderful dahlias and chrysanthemums.”

“The children put up a wonderful performance with a huge amount of effort being put into the models of the frantically scary spiders.”

Mike Leon’s “outstanding” vegetables were awarded both the Ernest Wright and Victory Hall Cup.

Alec Parker won the Dahlia Cup for the best dahlia exhibit and Doug Leslie swept the board with his chrysanthemums winning the Chrysanthemum Cup in the process.

Alec added to his trophy collection with the Outspan Cup for the best exhibit in other flowers while Ron Smith was the leading entrant with his fuchsias winning the Allday Roofing Cup.

Glenys Welstead’s floral art and cooking scooped the Bovingdon Horticultural Society Bowl, the Horwood Bakery Cup and the Copse Hill Challenge Cup.

Six-year-old Polly O’Donnell won every class in the children’s section which included both cooking and floral art. As a result she was the clear winner of the Junior Cup.

Shopkeepers and businesses entered into the summer spirit by maintaining the village’s colourful hanging baskets.

The baskets were made up by Steve Foskett of Stony Lane. In this year's competition first place went to Parish Electricals, second place to Davies the Dentist and third was awarded to Pendley Estate Agents.
