A Scout group in North Watford is among the first in the district to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

There were jumps and cheers of joy today as the First North Watford Scout group in Leggatts Way continued its centenary celebrations.

As they posed for their birthday picture each member showed off their centenary badge with pride.

The blue and maroon design, created by 14-year-old Joel Dunton, was just one of the many activities the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and their families have been enjoying to commemorate the milestone.

The celebrations began in May when more than 150 members held a special camp in Lees Wood in Chandlers Cross.

It was here that long-serving member Norman Hicks, 83, of Little Graylings in Abbots Langley was awarded with the movement’s highest honour the Silver Wolf.

Norman joined the club when he was just ten years old and has been a leader for 60 years.

He said: “There are so many people who have done so much for the group. It’s great the numbers are still growing and more youngsters are joining.

“I was presented with my Silver Wolf at the camp by both the county and district Commissioners. It was such a special moment.”

The club was formed in 1909 and was based at Christ Church. In May 1914 it transferred to the Boy Scout Association.

It continued as the ninth South West Hertfordshire group until it became the first North Watford group due to change of areas of district.

The Alpha Venture Unit was part of the group for about ten years until venture units ceased to exist - about 30 members of the unit obtained the Queens Scout award.

The group is holding a reunion evening on Saturday, September 26, and organisers hope both present and past members will attend. The evening will be an opportunity to gather and share memories and photographs.

Group Scout leader Julia Boydon said: “We are a lively and growing group. The re-union will mark what is a truly special year for us.”
