A MAN who was found dead in a New Cross flat died from multiple stab wounds, a post-mortem examination has found.

Emergency services were called to Filton Court in Avonley Road at 1pm on Tuesday (September 8), where they found the man's body on the second floor.

Officers have not been able to establish the identity of the man, who is believed to be in his 50s.

A second man, aged 51, was found at the flat suffering from cuts. He was arrested and remains in hospital where his condition is not believed to be life threatening.

Firefighters helped several people to safety from the Filton Court flats but the man, believed to be in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Residents of the block had to be evacuated and many are now in nearby hotels or staying with relatives.

Akeem Onafowora, 27, said: "I saw smoke but couldn’t get out.

"We got out through the window by the fire brigade and I passed them my baby first.

"I was very scared, I just hoped I wasn’t going to die."

Marisa Nzekwe, 29, said the injured man had smashed the flat window to escape.

The bank manager said: "The guy who smashed the window cut his hand and blood was dripping down onto the woman’s window below.

"She thought there was a burglary and told me so I evacuated.

"I couldn’t smell smoke but then another neighbour screamed fire.

"Before we knew it smoke just kept coming out of the flat.

"One neighbour couldn’t get out her door because someone was being resuscitated."

Police have not yet identified the dead man but say they are treating his death as suspicious.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place today at Greenwich mortuary.
