CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a church on part of an electricity sub-station site have been deferred by councillors.

The proposal by the Jehovah's Witnesses to build a single storey church in St John's Road, Sidcup, ,just off the High Street, went before Bexley Council’s planning control committee for planning permission last week.

The sub-station only takes up part of the land, but the rest is currently empty, and was formerly used as a car park for Sidcup’s driving test centre.

The proposal is to use the church on Sundays and weekday evenings, with opening hours of 8am to 10pm daily.

The Jehovah's Witnesses already have a church in Hatherley Avenue, just off the other end of the High Street, but say it is inadequate for their needs and the new building would supplement the current church.

Its new church would host two services on a Sunday, a service and bible study for two hours each weekday evening, plus seasonal services and occasional meetings.

The plans will now go back to the committee’s next meeting on September 17.
