AN ANONYMOUS phone tip-off has led to a benefit cheat being given an 18 month conditional discharge.
Stephen Meen, of Maritime Gate, Northfleet, admitted failing to notify Gravesham Council of a change of circumstances and making a false statement to the council.
Dartford Magistrates’ Court sentenced the 37-year-old last Wednesday (August 26) after hearing he had continued claiming housing and council tax benefit despite his wife and son moving into his home.
Meen claimed a total of £4,606.17 he was not entitled to.
He told the court: “I’m not proud of what I’ve done.”
Meen was ordered to pay £200 costs.
An anonymous call to the council prompted the investigation.
