SWANLEY: BNP councillor defends party after members burn gollywog at festival

A BNP councillor has defended the party after members were filmed burning a gollywog and making racist comments during a festival.

Paul Golding, British National Party councillor for the St Mary’s ward in Swanley, has condemned members who were shown performing the mock trial of the gollywog.

A News of the World reporter filmed the ritual while undercover at the party’s Red White and Blue family festival in Derbyshire last month.

The group, which included a 12-year-old girl, dubbed the stuffed toy ‘Winston’ and charged him with being black before dropping him onto a fire.

One member, identified as John Coombes, of Maidenhead, Berkshire, a council candidate for that area, said: “He thinks he's not black. He's charged with being black. Get on there.”

The 45-year-old added: “Let's get a real one. In the town we'll find one or two.”

Police in Derbyshire have launched an investigation after seeing the video footage.

A spokeswoman said: “Officers will be contacting the newspaper which alleges that an undercover reporter witnessed unlawful activity while at the event.”

Cllr Golding, who was elected in February, says the views of the people involved in the mock trial are not representative of the BNP.

He said: “If you subtract these morons from our 13,000 members it is something like 0.01 per cent of the party.

BNP Councillor for the St Mary's ward of Swanley claimed Helen Forster had never been a member of his party, but she was registered as a member and activist under the name Helen Colclough

“They are all being disciplined and it will be very severe, if not being kicked out of the party.”

The News of the World article claims members gave Nazi-style salutes and shouted Sieg Heil, and music with racist lyrics supporting Hitler was played.

Cllr Golding said he was at the festival but was not aware of the racist activity, and he says the party is not racist.

Party leader MEP Nick Griffin was also at the event, which was attended by around 1,200 BNP supporters.

He said the party will be organised to give non-whites no power if new legislation forces it to allow them to become members, the article alleges.

Cllr Golding says the BNP is for white British people, so there would be no reason for non-whites to join other than to cause trouble within the party.

Last month News Shopper revealed that a Gravesend woman convicted of intimidating an Asian mother was a member of the BNP, after Cllr Golding made a video stating she was not.

Helen Forster, aged 32, of Park Place, denied being a member in the video posted on YouTube and the BNP website, but she was registered under a different surname - Colclough.

Cllr Golding says he was unaware Forster was a member of the party under a different name at the time of making the video.

What a shame to burn such a lovely toy. What with the pc brigade outlawing them in shops and the BNp burning them how the hell are we supposed to buy them anymore - theya re toys nothing more. I had them as a child and NEVER thought of them as representing black people - this world has gone mad!

As a child, I too had a golliwog and thought only of it as another toy. However, now that I am older and wiser I can see that there is much more to it than that simplistic childish viewpoint.

The pictures shown here illustrate perfectly just how powerful a symbol it can be. There can be no justification for the disgraceful behaviour shown by these BNP supporters.

The BNP continues to deny that it is a party steeped in racism. This story highlights that despite their protests they still attract racists to their party. They cannot deny that fact, especially in the light of these images.

The BNP aren't even fooling themselves. We know they are racist, they know they are racist, and the fact they get votes just shows they aren't only ones.

It's a sad fact that there is still a lot of ignorance and hate in British society. The BNP are that hate and ignorance in the form of a political party. They claim to promote Britishness but are too stupid to release that the best British traits are our tolerance, our sense of fair play and our diversity. Much of what makes this country Great has come through immigration and assimilation from the Empire.

This is stupid, racist, behaviour. But what does it really say about the BNP? Have we stopped judging political parties on their policies? Have we now begun judging political parties on the secretly-filmed actions of a hand-picked sample of two or three of their worst-behaved members? There are a few idiots in every party and if you went undercover at Labour or Tory events, I'm sure you could find some misbehaviour too. So what? The journalists who wrote that article didn't go to the festival intending to give a balanced portrayal of BNP members. They knew in advance exactly what their story was going to be and went with the intention of seeking out any stupid racist behaviour they could find for two reasons:
1 - that's what sell newspapers;
2 - it's currently fashionable for newspapers and politicians to prove how un-racist they are by bashing the BNP at every opportunity.
Can't we have a proper, level-headed dialogue in the media about the BNP and the issues they raise, and why so many people support them, rather than merely dealing in hysterical smears and meaningless non-stories like this doll-burning nonsense?

What an isult to English culture; golliwogs have been a treasured rag doll for children since the late 19th century. What do the BNP represent? Didn't the Nazis trash German culture as they saw fit, the excuse being that it wasn't racially pure enough?

The only well thought out, sensible comment on here ricker. Journalist will ensure they make their reports look however they want to.

Indeed! They sought out what they knew they were guaranteed to find. Supporters of BNP can twist it anyway they want to but the fact remains there was (and always will be) a racist following at BNP events.

If the BNP wants to be a serious opposition party it needs to weed out members like this. I'm sure it loses throusands of votes because of negative publicity created by a small number of rogue members. It's a shame because its views on many topics bring a refreshing change to British politics.
