MURDER squad officers are asking for witnesses to come forward after a 27-year-old Orpington man was shot in a street.

Three hours after Daniel Herbert had spoken with his mother Androulla, of Holywell Close, he was found after having been shot in the head at close range in Clements Street, Rotherhithe.

He was taken to hospital after the shooting at 2am on August 17 but died the following day.

Mr Herbert was very familiar with the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey areas and had many friends there even though he had recently been living with his mum in Orpington.

Police want to hear what happened to Mr Herbert in the period leading up to the shooting.

Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons said: “Daniel had close ties to the borough of Southwark and was very familiar with the area.

“We know he had been in and around Bermondsey for much of the day and he spoke to his mother at 11pm.

“What we need now is to piece together how he spent that day and what happened in those crucial hours between talking to his mum and him being shot in Clements Road.

'”We know he had been in the company of four or five white men immediately prior to his callous murder, where he was shot at close range in the street.

“Sadly he lost his fight for life and I would urge anyone with any information to contact us without delay.”

“We aim to establish who did this before they can harm anyone else and bring justice for Daniel and his family, “ said DCI Lyons.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He is in custody at a south London police station.
