A PENSIONER who was robbed and left with a broken cheek bone says he is still suffering from the assault following the conviction of his attacker.

Gurdial Matharu, aged 67, says he was on his way home from Dartford Working Men’s Club when he was kicked and thrown to the ground by two muggers demanding his wallet, which contained £70.

On August 18 one of his attackers, Joselyn Watson, aged 38, of Priory Road, Dartford, was found guilty of robbing Mr Matharu and causing him GBH with intent, following a trial at Maidstone Crown Court.

Watson’s accomplice Brett Henderson, aged 37, of Trevithick Drive, Dartford, had earlier admitted the same charges.

Since the attack in April by the railway bridge in Priory Road, Mr Matharu never comes home by himself, and has to be picked up from the club in Essex Road by his wife.

The former self-employed electrician, of Burnham Road, Dartford, ended up in Darent Valley Hospital where it was feared he might even lose vision in his left eye.

Mr Matharu, known to his friends as Charlie, said: “When I came to the railway bridge they came up either side of me.

“They said give me your wallet, I thought they were joking.

“I put my hand on my back pocket where my wallet was and started walking away.

“One got my neck and one hit me in the cheek.

“They broke my cheek bone and kept hitting me.

“I was grabbed by the neck and I still have pain there. They then pulled my leg and threw me on the floor.”

Mr Matharu, who moved to the UK from India in 1962, says he still gets headaches from when he was hit in the head.

He said: “I didn’t know where I was.

“My back hurts from when they were kicking me, I’m still in pain.

“I feel rough still, I don’t feel very well.

“I used to go to the working men’s club every night, but not now.”

Watson and Henderson are due to be sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on September 18.
