NOT many people may realise there are lighthouses along the Thames.
But radio hams in Bexleyheath have been doing their bit to make sure they, along with all other lighthouses and lightships are valued, preserved and restored.
North Kent Radio Society, based at Rendezvous, the pop-in parlour in Graham Road, Bexleyheath, has been taking part in the annual International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend, when amateur radio enthusiasts are invited to set up a temporary radio station near a lighthouse to publicise the cause.
The society set up its station next to the Crossness lighthouse, on the Thames at Belvedere, and made contact with other stations around the UK and Europe.
This is the first time the Crossness lighthouse has been used in the event, and the society hopes to establish it as an annual location.
The society meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month in Bexleyheath and visitors are welcome.
