A RAFT of new jobs could be light at the end of the tunnel for the long-term unemployed in north Kent.

While visiting Dartford on July 29, Communities Secretary John Denham announced the Government will spend £10m to provide 1,800 new jobs in Kent over the next few years.

These jobs are aimed at the long-term unemployed and 18 to 24 year-olds, and around 600 of them will be in north Kent, with roles available including work in construction and customer services.

Mr Denham said: “In the downturn it is essential the government reaches into the heart of Kent’s hardest hit communities to help.”

Kent County Council will create 1,000 of the jobs within its own ranks and with partner organisations.
