VIDEO - BROMLEY: Safer Bromley TV sent live by Olympic star Iwan Thomas

OLYMPIC runner Iwan Thomas switched on a network of new TV screens, aimed at helping people stay safe in the borough.

The Safer Bromley Partnership has paid £60,000 to install 10 flat screen TVs in 10 locations including shops, cafes and community centres.

The screens will broadcast short film clips on crime, antisocial behaviour and health issues.

Bromley Council’s executive member for public protection and safety Councillor Colin Bloom said: “It will be an effective way of reducing the fear of crime.

“One of the things we’re very keen on is making sure the residents of Bromley feel that Bromley is as safe as it can possibly be.”

Safer Bromley TV was switched on at The Glades shopping centre on July 28.

Members of the Safer Bromley Partnership include Bromley Council, Bromley police, health, probation and fire services, the London Ambulance Service, the Metropolitan Police Authority and Broomleigh Housing Association.

This is horrific!

This has mass connotations of George Orwell's 1984.

For 'Safer Bromley TV' simply read 'telescreens' - the two-way television screens in Orwell's novel that are in all buildings and homes, which broadcast propaganda and transmit back the activities of anyone passing in front of the screen.

Oh Excalibur, nothing of the sort.

Unlike the dystopian world of Winston Smith, these Bromley screens only transmit one way.

There is an awful lot more going on in the UK that you could liken to 1984.

If you really want another good read, try Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
