ELECTRICITY has now been restored to thousands of residents affected by the power cut in Bexley, Dartford and Orpington.

EDF Energy Network engineers worked throughout the night to repair cables and continue the biggest deployment of mobile generators in the history of the London network.

Nearly 100,000 people have been without electricity since a fire on a cable bridge at the Riverside Industrial Estate in Dartford broke out on Monday.

Police are keeping an open mind as to the cause of the fire, but are not ruling out vandals or thieves.

Work is continuing at the site and EDF say residents may lose power for several minutes as a new 132,000 volt cable is connected to the network later this morning.

Bob Lane, EDF’s director of network operations, said: “Once again we would like to thank everyone for their continued patience in these exceptional and very difficult circumstances.

“This was a major incident that required a complex and difficult solution.

“We have worked round the clock as quickly as was safely possible and we are grateful to people for being so understanding.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this incident has caused.

“While supplies have been restored, we will continue to work over the next few days to return the network fully to normal operation.

“During this period we would ask people to continue to use power for essential purposes only.”
