POWER CUT UPDATE: Police say vandals or thieves could have caused fire to electricity cables

POLICE are keeping an open mind on whether the fire that brought a power cut to thousands of residents was caused by vandals or thieves.

A fire on a cable bridge at the Riverside Industrial Estate in Dartford broke out on Monday leaving nearly 100,000 people in Dartford, Bexley and Orpington without electricity.

Power company EDF Energy Networks said tonight it now expects permanent power will be restored to all remaining customers tomorrow morning (July 23).

Its engineers are continuing to work around the clock to restore electricity.

The majority of Bexley customers have had their power supply permanently restored, with the remainder having access on a rota basis.

Members of the public can view the supply timetable at www.edfenergy.com or by telephoning the EDF Energy Networks Emergency Contact Centre on 0800 028 0247.

Key sites including care homes are being prioritised for the supply of on-site generators.

At a press conference this afternoon, Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Bishop from Kent police said: “It could be vandals or it could be an attempt to steal metal from the pipes.

"It is difficult to say what the motive was.

“It would have been very dangerous dealing with electricity, which is clearly a cause for concern.

“It’s difficult to say how they got in there because of the damage caused to the towers.”

She added: “We can’t jump to any conclusions as to the cause whether vandals or attempted theft.

“This is going to take time in terms of forensics, we have to make sure we have maximised those opportunities.”

DCI Bishop said police have checked with hospitals for anyone who has been admitted with any burns.

She said: “It was a very remote location in Dartford. We would appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious.

“The people who did it were in touching distance of live cables.”

Bob Lane, EDF Energy's director of network operations, has been quoted as saying "From our investigation, we believe two substantial locks on metal doors at either end of the cable bridge were cut with heavy duty tools."

Anyone with any information should call Kent police on 01474 366091.

Well what has the UK come to?
One of the worst countries to be in with children gone wild and their parents who’ve lost control of them don’t care enough to raise their kids properly. The vandals who set fire to the electricity cables should take full responsibility as well as their parents, they should be made to pay for the damage caused as well as named and shamed for all to see but with this being England and the lenient laws and punishment that we have here the vandals will only get off with a warning making it seem ok for others to pull dangerous stunts like this in the future. The law needs to change harsher sentences need to be given out and parents need to take more responsibility for their children’s actions other wise when will this end?

So what about the amount of CCTV cameras in the vicinity? Have they been checked?
There seems to be a very laid back attitude by those in authority over this whole affair. One wonders if in fact it was a terrorist attack after all and the police are keeping it quiet. Let's face it, a few intermittant attacks like this would do more damage than one bomb.

I hope EDF energy has sufficient funds to compensate all those affected by the power cut. Some may say that it is nnot their fault as it was due to vandalism, however I take a different view. With all the profit they make they surely should have more security in order to protect this happenning. If this is not the case then they should pay the cost to all those who have not just had to endure this but have also had to spend more in order to get through. What a shame also that public houses or churches did not see this as a prime opportunity to do something for their communities. What did they do instead? Most closed their doors!

Unfortunately if the police decide it is vandalism that caused the power cut then there is no payout as EDF are not liable.
However if anyone can prove that EDF did not properly protect the area then surely consumers have a case?
So, has anyone taken photographs of the area latey that show exactly how the gates were secures. I foir one ahve heard stories of one small padlock on the gate. How about the CCTV cameras? If EDF did not mantain them properly then again they are liable...

Why are people so quick to blame youths. That is the true disgrace, if I were to blame it on a certain race without foundation people would be very quick to jump onto the discriminatory behaviour, so why is it acceptable to single out a group by age... pathetic in honesty. Besides, rumour has it it was a disgruntled former EDF engineer, who would of known what it takes to get into there, regardless of what measures were in place, so EDF wouldn't of been able to do much...

Surely if you pay a company to provide a service, and they fail to provide that service, you cannot be expected to pay? The reason for the failure should be irrelevant: it's up to them to provide the service they're contracted to provide.

With regards to compensation, it's unfortunate that there will be none! Well not with out court action.
The best we can expect is to be able to claim under Ofgens Guaranteed Standards of Performance.
It states that if you are without power for 18 hours you are entitled to £50 and an extra £25 for each further 12 hour period.
But.. if you check the EDF website it states "We are still talking to our regulator Ofgem about our guaranteed standards for this exceptional event and more information will be available soon.
SO it looks like they are trying to wriggle out of the most basic of payment! The statement then goes on to say "As always any losses have to go through your own insurance."
This is simply not good enough. I do hope that Ofgen see sense and enforce the standards that they have set. I'm sure that most people have lost at least £50 worth of food, I know I have!

lets hope these get named and shamed, and that EDF pay out compensation. Surely they should have a contingency plan for things like this and how easy it has been to shut it all down by some vandalism. I say if the culprits are caught they should be placed in Danson Park and let everyone that has been affected let their feelings be known. If EDF wont pay compensation, let the culprits or parents pay the compensation! See how they like loosing money !!

I really don't think this is down to kids, how many do you know that randomonly wander around with bolt cutters? They wouldn't have bothered to make the effort to break into such a random place.

I believe it was either thieves or most likely terrorism. Think about it, we live so close to bluewater, if they were planning to hit it lack of power, would lose cctv coverage and close the dartford crossing, causing gridlock thus causing more choas as people try to flee the area, thus hampering any rescue attempts. Maybe this was some sort of trial run?

Please be warned I had a freezer breakdown last year and claimed for approx £160 with one previous claim over the past 6 years and my premium went through the roof nearly another £30 per month and when shopping around for cover had the same problem so claiming from you insurance could cost you dear.

I must say that the thought of terrorism did cross my mind (given that Britains terror threat was recently downgraded) but the most likely explanation is somebody trying to steal metal for scrap.
I would certainly like to view the facility to gauge accessibility and judge whether security should have been employed to protect it!

Time to get a decent body of people organized ready to help make claims etc. Maybe a website showing the failings of EDF and also giving advice to people that need to claim. Must be plenty of affected professional people that could give voluntary help. Their is a lot to be thought about, how do we get rid of the vast amount of waste food. Will EDF offer central skips at there cost??? Who will reset timers and other equipment that will have failed, ie. Many alarm systems will have lost memory and will need re-programming. This costs money for a callout, who will pay???

This would be amusing if it wasn’t so sad, Even though the police say that they still have an open mind as they have insufficient evidence to reach any conclusions as yet. Writers here are still able to place blame with ease? So, it would appear that this situation was the result of vandalism caused by a juvenile pikey terrorist thief, formerly employed by EDF? Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Bishop from Kent police, please take note!

Well!! This was no accident whoever did this knew what they were doin! it werent kids, as they would have been dead as soon as they opened the bridge doors! LIVE CABLES SUDDEN DEATH!
Many people i talk to think it is a terror group, this was done to monitor the damage done to our communications systems, emergency procedures etc etc. The worrying question is WHY! These terror fanatic Bas***ds flew a bloody jet liner into the twin towers ffs, so my guess is their capable of anything!! What a bloody worrying sick evil world we all bloody live in!!

if the thieve or vandals are caught for this crime then there punishment should be threefold to the following.

1. re imbrues all the food in every ones freezers that went off!

2. pay back all businesses that had to shut there loss of earnings.

3. spend the rest of their lives with no electricity.

and to be honest i still see this as a relaxed diseplin the anti humanist in me would rather they got 4000 amps to the genitals!

What makes people believe that it was *children* who did this? The fact that both sides were broken into shows that there was thought put into it, not some kids doing a random act.

My husband brought up a good point, what were those people REALLY after? The fact that they wanted the power shut off, what were they really planning and did they get away with it?

Did they want to rob a bank by using a distraction and the fact that the alarm would have been useless?

We don't know yet and that's why no one should assume that it was kids being stupid.

There's a reason they went out of their way to do this, but we'll never be told.
If it is terrorism then they now know that a couple of well placed attacks will wipe out the south east's electricity as I doubt this is EDF's only single point of failure in the power grid. EDF have to ensure this can't happen again, at their cost!

Actually had some power this morning!!
Amazing how much we all rely on electricity...

Well I heard from someone at Dartford Council that it was people trying to steal copper pipes, obviously something went wrong. I've heard reports of explosions, so clearly the thieves had a mishap, but don't worry people he got what was coming, he was killed

bexleyman says...
10:28am Thu 23 Jul 09

Why is everyone so sure it was deliberate though, all you have is EDFs say that the padlocks were broken...
Would they really like to admit a physical fault with their cables caused many millions of pounds of damage...
I somehow doubt terrorism, terrorists are fairly quick to take claim for stuff they haven't even done, let alone what they have!

You only have to look at this area to see that youths are a big problem bored with nothing better to do then to cause trouble and make peoples lives a misery, I've seen what these kids (chavs) get up too not all of them are innocent it's about time something was done about it.
