OTHER boroughs are being urged to follow Bromley’s example when it comes to caring for war memorials.

A London Assembly report praises the council for having an inventory of all the 366 memorials in the borough.

Each entry in the register shows the location, a short history, names of the fallen and photographs.

According to the report Not Forgotten: A Review of London’s War Memorials, by the assembly’s planning and housing committee, this register enables the council to give proper consideration to any planning application that affects a memorial.

The five volume inventory can be seen at the Civic Centre, Stockwell Close, Bromley, and in several of the borough’s libraries.

Executive councillor for renewal and recreation Julian Benington said: “Preserving our war memorials as a significant part of our heritage is not only important to the Council, but also to many of our community groups who have worked with us over the years to ensure they are well maintained and treated with respect and honour.

“These memorials remind us of the men and women who have given their lives for us in the past, and those who are now making the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan and recently in Iraq.”
