ORPINGTON: Undated 20p raises £265 for charity

A TWENTY pence piece proved to be a lot more valuable when it was dropped into a collection box.

Staff at Orpington-based charity Harris HospisCare spotted the coin when sorting through donations and put it on an internet auction site where it raised £265 for the charity.

It sparked a lot of interest because it is one of the around 200,000 20p coins which were produced without a date due to an error at the Royal Mint.

The charity’s fundraising manager Christine Davies said: “We were delighted to find the 20p in a collection box.

“[Raising £265] is almost unbelievable really and we were delighted to achieve that figure.”

The money raised will be used to help the charity care for patients in their homes.

Great result!

I hope all other shops check their boxes - low life thieves may be tempted to try to grab them otherwise in the hope of finding another one.
