THOUSANDS of postal workers staged a 24-hour strike in a row with Royal Mail.

Workers in all areas of deliveries, collections and processing across London, including Lewisham and Greenwich, walked out last Friday (June 19) after claiming Royal Mail is pressing ahead with cuts in jobs and services.

The Communication Workers Union says just under 1,500 of its members in south east London took part in the strike.

Dave Ward, the union’s deputy general secretary, said: “Royal Mail has broken the 2007 agreement which committed the company to negotiating modernisation with the union.

“We are now seeing cuts but not modernisation in the postal industry and there’s only so long before this is going have a major impact on services.”

The union is offering Royal Mail and the Government a three month no-strike deal if they fulfil the agreement to work with the union over modernisation.

Royal Mail says it has honoured existing modernisation agreements.
