POLICE in Bexley will be using new technological developments to identify people driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Electronic screening devices will be used in the borough during the Met-wide summer crackdown on drinking and driving.

The sophisticated devices are capable of producing specific, sensitive readings and can also record additional information such as ages and locations, which up until now, has not been possible.

The crackdown will see an increased number of roadside breath tests and the use of field impairment tests, to test for drugs use.

Chris Halford, Chief Inspector of operations at Bexley police, said: “As the evenings stay lighter for longer and the warm weather continues, the temptation exists for motorists to drink and drive.

“Alcohol stays in the body longer than people may think.

“Drivers could still be over the limit the next morning.“ He added: “It is never safe to assume you can drive as normal after a few drinks or taking drugs."
